SyncChef

A Personalizable, One-Stop Recipe App for At-Home Cooks

Frame 16.jpg

Overview

About the project

What is the app about?

SyncChef is a project dedicated to improving the way people eat while attacking food wastage problems at its’ core. As an app, its main function will be taking in the inputs of the user, such as food resources that are available in the user's home, and then taking those inputs and generating recommended recipes. The app is designed to accommodate the user’s personalized settings, such as dietary, difficulty, and time restrictions.

The goal of this app would be to solve all these proposed problems and address the central problem of ‘how do we develop an app that gives inspiration to at-home cooks, allowing them to access more recipes and dishes?’. By introducing recipes within the individual constraints (financial, dietary, time, skill level) of each person along with meal prepping, people can cook more efficiently, eat healthier, whilst creating less waste.

Background Research

“I bought too many herbs for one recipe—how do I keep them from going to waste?”

“What can I whip up with these odds and ends in my fridge before they go bad?”

As a college student trying to balance a busy school schedule and maintaining a healthy eating habit, these questions plagued my mind everyday as I tried to figure out what I should be doing for my next meal. Furthermore, when time allowed and I decided to try a new recipe, I would often be left with an abundance of certain ingredients that I had no plan for. Before I knew it, these items would spoil, leaving me with a sense of guilt for wasting food.

Across the U.S, we waste between 30-40% of the country’s food supply, of that, household waste accounts for 40-50%. Annually, that adds up to more than 37 billion lbs of food that is thrown away. Not only is this extremely wasteful, the amount of energy and water used to produce, process, and transport this food are also gone to waste.

This inspired me to think of a solution that could address this issue, a tool that could help guide people cook while being more efficient and sustainable with their food resources.

Quick Glimpse

Persona

In order to better gauge the user needs behind this product, we have come up with two user personas to represent the target audience of the app

Ideation

Initial Designs

Wireframe

After the initial idea, I then did a rapid design of the wireframe. Focusing mainly on the flow of the user.

The apps' recipe functions were designed to improve the overall cooking experience for the user.

Learnings & Retros

What Worked?

By conducting user research among potential users of the app, I was able to notice flaws that competitors on the market have overlooked in the past. Among the feedback received, this was a high priority that my app targets to address. Additionally, a simple, yet efficient userflow allows the user to access a variety functions the app offers.

What I Learned

From this project, I've learned the importance of separating my design phases. Starting from research, by understanding the market and doing background research on my competitors, I was able to design in a more efficient way, addressing issues that my app aimed to solve.
