Background

The motivation for a motion capture feature to be supported on Traini's mobile apps didn’t happen overnight. Since the start, our lessons were taught through strictly text and graphics - in recent months the demand for a more intuitive instructional interface have been requested the appstore and other feedback methods.

For the design team, we were always supporters of the initiative to improve usability and functionality of our lessons. In 2023, we were all excited to see motion capture make it onto the roadmap — while also knowing it would be a difficult challenge with many constraints and considerations.

Approach

In developing the motion capture feature for Traini, my primary focus was twofold: to ensure seamless integration with the app's existing content as well as to enhance the training experience for both the dogs and their owners.

Starting from extensive research and iterative testing, I crafted a motion capture system that accurately interprets a dog's movements and provides instant feedback. By incorporating this technology into our app, I aimed to bridge the gap between traditional training methods and the use of modern technology, offering a more interactive and engaging way to train.

To facilitate adoption and maximize usability, I integrated tutorials directly into the app, guiding users through the setup process and illustrating the benefits of this innovative feature. This approach not only educates but also empowers our users, making dog training more accessible and effective.

Impact

Post launch, our analytics team tracked the impact of the motion capture function on dog training for our users. The results from user feedback showed a sizable increase in the overall usage of our app and overall increase in lessons taught.
